Suspicious Business Registers – New Attempts at Deceiving Serbian Companies

A new attempt to deceive companies in Serbia is underway. In the past days, envelopes with payments slips and an instruction to pay money within five days for the purpose of being listed in the register, that is, the so-called "Poslovna baza" ("Business Database"), have been arriving to company addresses. Aleksandar Trifunovic, the adviser to the "Zastitnik preduzetnika i privrednika Srbije" ("Protector of Entrepreneurs and Business of Serbia") association, says for N1 that what’s disputable in this case is that the documents that are being sent to companies from which money is asked do not say that it’s company promotion or that they are sent for marketing purposes.

– The aim is to deceive companies to think that an official state organ is sending this. It happens in the periods when other fees are due for companies, so, out of fear of missing a deadline, companies pay the requested amount – Trifunovic points out.

According to him, if companies believe that they are being tricked, they should address the police, and if they believe that their consumer rights are jeopardized, they should address the Ministry of Trade and Tourism.

Trifunovic therefore recommends for companies, before they do anything, to ask around about everything in detail and notes that, each year, various kinds of attempts to deceive companies are noticed, and the worst thing is that, in most cases, the perpetrators are not brought to justice.
