Spiljani instead of Mehov Krs - New crossing opened at Montenegrin border

New international crossing at the Montenegrin border - Spiljani, which will be used instead of previous border crossing Mehov Krs, has been ceremoniously opened in the presence of the representatives of the Government of Serbia and the EU Delegation to Serbia.

According to the Customs Administration, a total value of the investment is 2.15 million euros, most of which have been provided by the Republic of Serbia. Within the scope of its special programme, the EU Delegation has also helped the project implementation by providing 128,000 euros. Reconstruction and modernization of this border crossing will facilitate the improvement of border services, make the flow of passengers and goods easier, and ensure more efficient control of goods and passengers.

- The ceremonious opening of reconstructed border crossing Spiljani points to Serbia's efforts to keep pace with the European terms of freight and passenger traffic, as well as to listen and recognize the needs of local population and adapts to them - said Diana Dragutinovic, the Minister of Finance of Serbia, adding that the "modernization of services and improvement of work on border crossings are part of the project comprising the reconstruction and modernization of 9 border crossing and two custom houses, for which the Customs Administration of the Ministry of Finance has earmarked certain funds".

- We are glad to have participated in this project by building and equipping new offices on 9 secondary border crossings - said Jose Antonio Gomes, a representative of the EU Delegation to Serbia, pointing out that "with this donation of 1.4 million euros, the European Union supports the intention of Serbia to make border crossing more efficient and safer, for the welfare of the citizens of Serbia and neighboring countries".

Old border crossing Mehov Krs has been relocated in order for the global and European standards to be met, for both border services and passengers, and at the request of the local population that has been facing numerous administrative and technical obstacles due to the fact that the old crossing was deep inside the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Works on Spiljani border crossing included the construction of an additional lane, complete infrastructure and signaling system, a joint control booth of the Customs Administration and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a parking lot for official vehicles, as well as a separate space for the needs of freight-forwarding companies.
