Since 2021, the Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate (SRBATOM) has been taking part in the international project of the European Commission for the upgrade of the early warning system for nuclear or radiation accidents. The project plans the procurement and installation of 33 measuring stations which will be distributed so as to improve the coverage of the entire territory of Serbia, in line with the existing risks.

– Considering that neighboring countries have active nuclear power plants and that the construction of new nuclear reactors is planned in Hungary, the installation of the new system will also upgrade the system of notification of nuclear or radiation accidents. This will improve the mechanism for a timely adoption of adequate measures for the protection of the populace and the environment from the harmful impact of ionizing radiation – SRBATOM announced.

The announcement adds that the existing system for an early warning of nuclear or radiation accidents, which the Directorate is in charge of, was established in 2007 and that it consists of a network of nine measuring stations.

– Following the installation of the new system for an early warning of nuclear or radiological accidents, Serbia’s territory will be covered by the most modern equipment of this type – the Directorate says.

At the meeting held on February 1-2, which, among others, was also attended by representatives of the Directorate, the process of the implementation of this project was initiated.

In line with the Law on Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security, among other things, SRBATOM follows the level of radioactivity, its changes, estimates its impact on the populace and the environment and provides guidelines for the implementation of adequate measures.

The system for the monitoring of the level of radioactivity also consists of a network of measuring stations – detectors for an automatic measuring of radioactivity in the environment, that is, a system for an early warning of nuclear or radiation accidents.
