The European Union will have to invest EUR 500 billion in new-generation nuclear power plants by 2050, said European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Bretton.

– Investments of EUR 50 billion, from now until 2030, will be needed for the existing nuclear power plants alone. And EUR 500 billion will be needed for those of a new generation – Bretton said for Le Journal du Dimanche.

He said that the EU planned for nuclear energy and gas energy to be marked as a “green” source and an important step toward attracting capital.

The EU is consulting with the member states about that proposition, with internal disagreements about whether those energy sources can truly be qualified as sustainable options.
