Recently Planned Cancellation of Belgrade Trolleys Prevented – Line 19 Operating Again

The trolley line 19 is available on Belgrade streets again from today, on a shortened route from Konjarnik to Slavija. After the line 28 returned in 2020, an act was adopted by which the line 19 is brought back too and all the decisions on the cancellation of trolley lines from November 2019 are revoked, the citizens association “Vratimo trolu 28” has announced.

– Two years ago, lines were being cancelled in the city and the total cancellation of the trolley system was planned. At the time, the city administration cited the inflexibility of trolleys in terms of routes and the effect of their overhead contact network on the aesthetic of the streets in the city center as the problems. Later it turned out that those problems could be very easily overcome by getting autonomous trolleys. In the meantime, the citizens showed that they disagree with the removal of the only ecological means of transport and fought for its survival in this period, which is critical for trolleys in Belgrade. The result is that this has contributed to the change of the position of the city administration regarding this issue – the press release says.

The association reminds that a new strategy of the development of the trolley system has been adopted, including the expansion of the network, the introduction of new lines and an increase in the number of vehicles, and the tender for the purchase of new trolleys, for the first time after 12 years, is expected this week too.

– It may seem at first sight that the ecology and the experts have won. Despite that, the citizens still don’t understand why the lines 19, 21 and 22 only go to Slavija and not to the Students’ Square, as they used to. They are also worried about the announcements of the future shortening of other lines, such as the line 29, also to Slavija – the press release says.
