New Smelter to Open in RTB Bor in August – Serbia to be Second Biggest Copper Producer in Europe from Autumn

The Cukaru Peki mine will open this autumn and be the first green mine here, thanks to which Serbia will become the second biggest producer of copper and gold in Europe, the deputy prime minister and minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Zorana Mihajlovic, stated today while visiting Metovnica.

– Thanks to the technologies of the 21st century, ecological mining is possible – Mihajlovic said following the signing of an agreement on the construction of a water supply system in Metovnica.

She added that Serbia produced 5% of copper in Europe at that moment and that, following the opening of the Cukaru Peki mine, it would be the second biggest producer, behind Poland.

Mihajlovic added that a smelter would open in Bor in August, which will operate at much higher environmental standards.
