Serbia and South Korea signed an agreement today (June 29, 2010) on cooperation in the area of information and communications technologies, which will establish a framework for future cooperation between the two states in that sector.

The agreement was signed by Serbian Minister of Telecommunications and Information Society Jasna Matic and Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission See Joong Choi, the Ministry says in a statement.

The cooperation will primarily refer to regulations in the telecommunications sector, development of broadband internet access, the shift from analogue to digital television, the management of the spectrum of radio frequencies and development human resources and information security.

On the basis of the signed agreement, Matic announced that joint projects would be defined in the next few weeks.

Based on that document, the two countries will strive to improve cooperation between business sectors, research and educational institutions, as well as between the government bodies and agencies dealing with telecommunications and information society.

Choi said that the focus on knowledge and systematic investment in education and development had contributed to the Republic of Korea becoming one of the world's most developed countries.

As for the significance of this agreement, Matic underlined that it was second only to agreements signed with the EU.

Taking into account the high level of development of telecommunications in the Republic of Korea, she expressed the hope that this experience will help Serbia meet the targets in the development strategy for electronic communication and information society, which will be Serbia’s Digital Agenda until 2020, the adoption of which is expected in July.

Matic and Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic will visit Samsung tomorrow and speak about investment opportunities in Serbia.
