Ecological alarm on Kereš river, wastewater from Subotica endangers fishpond "Kapetanski rit" and Tisa river

Polluted wastewater from Subotica flows through the Kereš river towards Municipality of Kanjiža and accumulations of Fishpond "Kapetanski rit" and the Tisa river.

Citizens of Kanjiža accused citizens of Subotica of polluting the Kereš river with the wastewater from the biggest city in the North of Bačka. Together with the Kereš river, entire river basin in this region is polluted due to unsuitable filter. Single "bypass" canal is used for diverting of wastewater from Subotica, which then bypasses Palić lake and, through Ludoš lake, reaches the Kereš river. About 600 ha of Fishpond "Kapetanski rit" depend on the Kereš river, of which pollution endangers functioning of the fishpond because it often results in pestilence of fish. Wastewater from Subotica could be diverted through Madaras and Čurgo canals, which empty in the Tisa river, but then the tourist zone around the Tisa river in Kanjiža and downstream would be in direct danger, whereas diverting of wastewater through Tisa-Palić canal would again close the circle towards Palić.
