Association of Online Workers Announces Protest Due to State’s Decision to Retroactively Collect Taxes for Past Six Years

The Association of Online Workers has announced a protest in front of the National Assembly of Serbia on Saturday, January 16, due to the state’s decision to retroactively collect taxes from them for the past six years, pointing out that their demands remain the same – the stopping of the tax collection and the start of negotiations.

The association has invited all online workers to come to the protest on Saturday at 3 pm in order to “express their dissatisfaction and say no to the theft from online workers”.

The today’s press release emphasizes that the state, through the activities of the Tax Administration, “has jeopardized the existence and the future of tends of thousands of families of online workers”.

– They accuse us of being tax evaders, of asking to be favored, they are trying to turn us against each other. They cite the law adopted 20 years ago, according to which we belong nowhere – neither as workers, nor employees, nor employers. They won’t let us be equal to others – the press release says.

They remind that, ahead of the New Year, the Tax Administration sent them thousands of tax collection notifications.

– In the middle of the pandemic, they want to take away from us up to 80% of what we’ve earned in the past five years. The demands are still the same – the stopping of the tax collection and the start of negotiations – the association points out.

They emphasize that their profession is one of the many affected by the crisis.

– The budget lacks EUR 4.2 billion, and this gap is being filled at the expense of online workers. They have turned their attention to us now that they need money they’ve spent on building stadiums, designing logos of public companies, while writing off debts of the biggest debtors. Support us – you are also under attack, which will not stop soon – the Association of Online Workers says.
