The City of Belgrade has issued the building permit for the reconstruction of the old Military Academy building, on the corner of Nemanjina and Resavska streets, which will become the Belgrade City Museum, said the deputy mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesic.

Vesic reminded that the solving of the complicated property relations, that is, the division of the parcels with the Serbian Armed Forces, had taken almost four years.

– The project is prepared and the requirements have been obtained from the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Belgrade. I am grateful, above all, to the employees at the Belgrade City Museum, the Secretariat for Culture, the Secretariat for Investments and the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments for the great job that's been done. Now that I've obtained the building permit, there are no more obstacles to the Belgrade City Museum getting its building, 117 since its founding. What follows is the opening of the tendering procedure for the contractor, and the works are to begin next year – Vesic said.

The Belgrade City Museum was founded in 1903 and has never had its own building. Today, it is spread across 14 locations. The area of the former Military Academy building is 17,057 square meters. The reconstruction of the building will cost around EUR 20 million, and once it's completed, it will be the largest museum in Belgrade, Beoinfo reports.

Vesic said that the new Belgrade City Museum would be a place that would store seven thousand years of Belgrade's history and added that he expected the museum to be completed by 2024.
