Vojvodina Biggest Soy Area in Europe, Serbia Largest Producer After Italy

Soybean does not have a long tradition of being grown in Serbia. Big production jumps were recorded in 1975 (from 4.4 thousand tons in 1974 to 20.9), in 1982 (from 84.6 to 179.6) and in 1999 (from 159.9 to 294 thousand tons). It is only in the past three years that there has been a continuous production growth: from 461 thousand tons in 2017, to 645.6 in 2018, to 700.5 in 2019, to 806 thousand tons in 2020.

Serbia is the second biggest European producer of soy after Italy, with a tendency of becoming the biggest one. In 2019, the production in Serbia amounted to one fourth of the total production in the EU, and the ratio certainly increased in 2020.

Observed by European regions, it is Vojvodina that takes the first place. Sumadija and West Serbia are 24th, Belgrade is 26th and South and East Serbia are 51st among more than 300 regions in Europe.
