The Netherlands Closes Borders for Passengers from Serbia and Montenegro

The Netherlands today closed its borders for passengers from Serbia and Montenegro, a week after it reopened them, citing the sudden increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus in those two countries as the reason.

Passengers from Serbia and Montenegro were allowed entry to the Netherlands from July 1, when the country, following the recommendations of the EU, opened its borders to 14 non-EU-member states, but also for China, under the condition that the country implements a reciprocal measure.

However, the Dutch government now says that it has been forced to remove Serbia and Montenegro from the list, due to the increase in the number of the infected in those countries, saying that Dutch passengers should only go to Serbia and Montenegro if it is “absolutely necessary”, Reuters reports.

The Council of the EU previously adopted the recommendation of lifting the temporary ban on travel to the EU for citizens of 15 countries worldwide on July 1, Serbia, included, but warned that the implementation of the recommendation was exclusively up to each individual country.
