- The license for the second fixed telephony operator in Serbia, which was bought on the tender by company Telenor for 1.05m EUR, will be officially granted on Friday, February 19th - Aleksandra Stefanović, the spokesperson of the Republic Telecommunications Agency (RATEL), told Tanjug on February 12th.
Telenor was the only bidder on the tender for the license, which was opened on January 12th, and, after the detailed examination of the bid, the Commission for realization of the public auction procedure stated that that company had submitted all the necessary documentation. The Government of Serbia accepted the bid on January 21st, while RATEL's Administrative Board granted the license to Telenor the next day, on January 22nd.
Once the second license for the fixed telephony operator is granted, Telekom's monopoly, which expired in June 2005, will be ended.
The primary condition that the interested companies had to meet on the tender was that they are registered to provide telecommunications services, that they had over 200m EUR worth of income in 2008, and that they have at least 1m subscribers. Telenor in Serbia has about 2.8m subscribers, and it is a part of Norwegian telecommunication company that operates in 14 countries.
