The Government of Serbia has given the consent for re-categorization of border crossing Jaša Tomić into international crossing. That decision is the result of long-time activities of the local self-government of Sečanj and exceptional cross-border cooperation, which were greatly supported by the Government of Serbia and the Executive Council of Vojvodina.
- Re-categorization of border crossing Jaša Tomić-Fenj is of exceptional importance not only to the citizens, but also to the economy and budget of the municipality of Sečanj. That is the shortest road from Timisoara, through Zrenjanin and Novi Sad, to central Europe. If you take this road, the distance between Timisoara and Novi Sad is about 130 kilometers. Re-categorization is significant for all of us in Banat, as well as for whole Vojvodina, because international airport in Timisoara is about 40 km away from the border - the Mayor of Sečanj, Predrag Milošević, estimated.
Based on the partnership programme, Romanian side has almost completed construction of the border crossing on its territory, while the crossing on Serbian side will be ready in early May 2010.
- We have already finished major share of the works. We are working at full steam, and what is left for us to do is to build a modern substation for terminals, one kilometer of road from Jaša Tomić to the border, and install light signalling - says Milošević.
- The border crossing to Romania near Jaša Tomić was open for five or six days per month, mainly at the time of holidays. Even during that short period of work, it proved it was profitable - people in the municipality of Sečanj pointed out.
