Kragujevac plans to use landfill gas for electricity production

- The unit that will be using landfill gas for production of electricity should be built at the landfill in Jovanovac near Kragujevac prior to 2012 - said the people from public utility company "Čistoća".

The CEO of "Čistoća", Dragoljub Grujović, said that, according to the company's expert estimates, the power production unit at the landfill would have the power of about 2 MW and supply electricity to about 3,600 households within the next seven years. At the same time, about 600 houses would be supplied with heating energy.

According to Grujović, the first phase of realization of the project for collecting and using landfill gas is underway and, in case of realization, it will be the first such project in Serbia.

The value of the work on project documentation is about 100,000 EUR and it should be finished prior to spring, which should be followed by its verification by the European Commission.

- According to our measurings, the concentration of methane at the depth of 14 meters in certain part of the landfill ranged between 60 and 67%, and landfill is considered rich with gas if concentration of methane exceeds 30% - said Grujović.

The landfill in Jovanovac produces gas daily due to rottening of organic matters.
