First line of “light” subway in Belgrade prior to 2012

General land-utilization plan 2021 included construction of the first line of light reailway transportation system, which will carry passengers from the crossroads of Ustanička Street and Kralja Aleksandra Boulevard to Tvornička Street in Zemun. Following the change in plan, the route has been changed from former Bridge-SIV-Municipal Building line to present Bridge- Hyatt-Arena.New Mercator-Municipal Building line.

The major part of the line 14.5 km long will be over the ground, except for 3-4 km from Sredačka Street to Students’ Square, which will go under the ground.

Đorđe Bobić, the city architect, said that the commencement of construction should be expected in 2007 and that it was expected that it lasted until 2012. The analysis of projected expenses shows that the construction works will cost about €230m, whereas the vehicles will take about €100m, which is attainable as investment until the year 2011. The difference between “light” and “heavy” subway is, first of all, in equipment. The tunnels and railway tracks will be of standard width, but the vehicles will be smaller and narrower. This is the strategic decision, because Belgrade has huge potential in tram and railway transportation, so that it has been decided that it should be implemented and that we should not say “or-or” anymore, but that public transportation should be unique.
