Largest wind farm in Europe to be built in Cantavir

The residents of the village of Cantavir near Subotica have already defined the majority of the contract on the renting of land for the construction of, as announced, the largest wind farm in Europe, worth EUR 700 million, which should produce power for “half of Europe”.

The wind farm is to be built by an Italian-owned company, which has already had two wind farms built in Serbia, two under construction and another nine planned, including the one in Cantavir, where the first wind generators are expected to be installed within the next four years.

Around a hundred parcels have already been rented for a period of 30 days, and agreements have been signed for the majority of them. The farmers who have rented some of their land believe that the construction of the wind farm will have positive effects within the green economy.

– This is a successful step toward a better life. Green energy does not pollute the air as much as thermal power plants. Alternative energy will enable us and our children to lead better lives – says Janos Kecenovic, a farmer from Cantavir.

The local community says that most residents see things this way and that they want to be constructive partners in the realization of this investment.

– The construction is to start in three to four years, once all the permits have been obtained. They are now in the phase of environmental impact analysis – says the president of the local community's Council, Atila Andras Djuricin.

The decision on the preparation of the Detailed Regulation Plan for the wind farm area was adopted by the City Assembly of Subotica, and the early public review took place during February, allowing everyone who's interested to give their opinion on the planning documents for an area exceeding ten thousand hectares.
