As the Ministry of Transport says for Novosti, the plan is for six airports to offer international flights in the future. In addition to Belgrade, Nis and Kraljevo, the airports to offer international flights are the ones in Novi Sad, Silver Lake and Uzice, which eKapija has already written about.
The airports in Nis and Kraljevo are part of the state company Aerodromi Srbije, and the Ponikve Uzice, Silver Lake and Rosulje Krusevac airports are in the process of being joined to it as well. The City of Bor has also asked for the founder's rights for the local airport to be transferred to the Republic of Serbia, which should take place by the end of the year, Novosti writes.
It is expected for the procedure of joining Aerodromi Srbije to be initiated for the Cenej Airport near Novi Sad by the end of the year as well, the competent ministry says.
The announcements of the expansion of the air transport system seem unrealistic and many wonder if Serbia even has enough passengers for all these airports. Professor Petar Mirosavljevic, the vice-dean of academic affairs at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering, believes that the potential for the development of this form of transport is huge.
– Joining and transferring the responsibility over airports from local communities to Aerodromi Srbije is a good move – Mirosavljevic believes.
– Serbia should develop hubs for Southeast Europe and pick up all the traffic to the most important intercontinental destinations – he says and adds that international business and tourist flights are something to strive for and that elements of shopping and entertainment should be introduced at passenger terminals.
Mirosavljevic notes that cheap fees should be offered to passengers, which will lead to a lowering of the total transport tariff. This way, he says, the country would attract passengers from the region, and the airport would become self-sustaining and profitable.
