Vienna to get new concert hall worth EUR 250 million – International contest for architectural design opens

A new concert hall will be built in Vienna, and the investment will be worth EUR 250 million. This was announced by the mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, city councilor Peter Hanke and the director of Wien Holding, Kurt Gollowitzer, at a press conference held on January 30, 2020.

The contest for an architectural design of the new hall has also opened. The plan is for all large concerts and other events to be held at the new hall with a capacity of 20,000 seats, which is four thousand more than the capacity of Wiener Stadthalle. This hall, which dates back to 1958, will be restored and repurposed. Further steps will be announced in the first quarter of 2020.

– We invite all design studios from Austria and the world to submit their designs of a multifunctional arena complying with all the latest technical and environmental standards – Hanke said.

All participants will be notified of the Austrian regulations when it comes to the size of the audience areas, emergency exits, wardrobes and other elements, Eurocomm PR Beograd announced. In addition to the urban planning, architectural and functional solution, the commission will rate the sustainability and profitability of the construction, managing and maintenance of the facility. The 11-member commission will make a shortlist of ten works in May 2020 and the winners will be announced this autumn.

– We want an arena that provides an optimal experience, functionality and flexibility and which is technically equipped. The arena should be energy efficient, accessible, adapted to climate change factors and compliant with the latest standards and digital technologies – said Gollowitzer.
