- The first concrete construction works on Y branch of the highway, that is, the bypass around Subotica, which is something that the people from this city expect for more than two decades, will start before the end of the next year - the Minister of Environment Protection and Spatial Planning, Oliver Dulić, promised.
He said in Subotica that the construction of that branch of Horgoš - Novi Sad highway, which was on the route of Corridor 10, would be one of the current Government's priority goals that must be achieved by the end of its mandate.
By the way, construction of Y branch started in 1990. Construction of remaining 22.5 km is expected to be finished prior to the end of year 2012, for which 120m EUR will be needed. Dulić told citizens of Subotica that the funds for that purpose had already been provided.
Construction of the bypass is one of the most important infrastructure projects for Subotica because it will result in relocation of international traffic from the city center. It is the road that goes from Hungary, that is, Europe, towards the east, and from Kelebija straight through Subotica. That road is used by trucks and towing trucks of all types, which is the reason why asphalt is damaged and air in Subotica is polluted.
So far, all the governments have been promising completion of this very important part of the road, but only about 10 kilometers have been built to the date, and they have been officially opened for traffic on several occasions. By the way, in addition to the deadline for completion of the bypass, which was extended every year, the authorities were also presenting different prices of construction of the bypass. Few years ago, that price amounted to about 15m EUR, while former Minister of Infrastructure, Velimir Ilić, "admitted" that construction of Y branch was quite expensive and that it would cost 25m EUR. The price that is mentioned today is 120m EUR.
The citizens of Subotica can not do anything but wait until 2012.
