(Takovo Uprising monument) The Government of Serbia will give EUR 5 million to rebuild the Obrenovic castle in Takovo, which burned down in 1917, the Mayor of Gornji Milanovac, Dejan Kovacevic, told the press.

– The preliminary design exists and the project design is under way, Kovacevic said and assessed that the castle replica will benefit the tourism growth “due to immense historical and cultural heritage of the Obrenovic dynasty.”

The castle of the king Aleksandar Obrenovic and Queen Draga, located next to Takovski grm monument dedicated to the Second Serbian Uprising, was built in 1902. The castle was built for two years according to the design of an architect from Vienna, made on the backs of the common people.

The castle was burned down in 1917 and from the former complex on the Obrenovic estate only servants' quarters remained which were used as village infirmary in the 1960s. Today only ruins remain.
