Experts recommend limiting outdoor activities in cities due to air pollution

The Institute of Public Health of Serbia Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut issued recommendations to the citizens pertaining to the air pollution in Serbia's cities. The institute suggested that citizens limit time spent outside, specifically in morning and evening hours.

The statement on the site of the Institution states that the Ministry of Health and the Institute for Public Health of Serbia urge the citizens to bear in mind that there is no need to panic, but point to the importance of implementing the aforementioned protection measures in conditions of air pollution.

– Current urban aerosol pollution is predominantly particulate (PM10 particles) and it varies depending on the presence of the source of pollution. These pollution concentrations depend on the climatic conditions in a particular territory and are common for these weather conditions and winter, the statement reads.

Namely, the concentrations and duration of particulate pollution are affected by low air temperatures, high air pressure, development of temperature inversion, registered in winter. These atmospheric conditions occur mainly in the early morning and evening hours.

They added that the causes of air pollution are: home heating, fossil fuel heating, large number of motor vehicles, low quality lignite combustion, irrational and inefficient energy consumption, inefficient fossil fuel combustion technologies, inadequate maintenance of industrial plants and more.
