African swine fever confirmed in Kladovo and Dimitrovgrad

New cases of African swine fever have been recorded on the territory of Kladovo and Dimitrovgrad municipalities, border areas to Romania and Bulgaria, Politika daily writes today.

National reference laboratory has confirmed the presence of the virus in wild hogs whose corpses were recently found in the area of Tekija and Kupuziste villages , which are part of Djerdap national park, and in the villages around Dimitrovgrad.

These are the first instances of the virus since the plague broke out mid-September last year in Srpski Itebej. Since then Serbia has kept the swine fever among the local swine population on Serbian farms under control.

However, having the proximity of Romania and Bulgaria in mind, countries that report dozens of hotspots, these border areas represent the high risk zones especially when it comes to the migration of wild hogs.
