He explains that Serbia does not import white bread, but only special types of toast that are not produced here, as well as frozen puff pastry and some types of croissants.
According to him these products are supplied by hotels and retail chains, and the two largest retail chains in Serbia, Delhaize and Lidl, account for about 90% of the total import of bakery products.
When asked why these products are imported if Serbia is sufficiently rich in wheat, Pralica explains that the domestic baking industry is mainly based on the production of white bread and does not have expensive production lines to produce these types of baked goods.
– Before we didn't have the need for those production lines here but in the last 10 years, a large number of hotels and supermarkets have been opened in Serbia, so there is a growing need for products not produced in Serbia, which they now import, Pralica adds.
