The results of the survey, published on the official Eurostat page, show that, in 2018, households in the EU spent over EUR 1,047 billion (equivalent to 6.6% of EU GDP) on 'food and non-alcoholic beverages', whereas those in Serbia spent EUR 7.05 billion, or 16.4% of the GDP.
Food and non-alcoholic beverage expenditures rank as the third most largest category of household expenditure after 'housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels', which accounted for 24% of household expenditure, and 'transport', which accounted for 13.2%. The study gives no data for Serbia in this category.
Households in Romania spent around a fifth of total household consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages (27.8%). The United Kingdom (7.8%) is on the opposite end of the list.
As for former Yugoslav states, food and non-alcoholic drinks made up a considerable portion of the total expenditures in Montenegro (24.8%), Croatia (18.8%) and Slovenia (14%).
The study gives no data for Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia.
