Kursumlija named “European Destination of Excellence” in Serbia

The Municipality of Kursumlija has won this year's national selection for the “European Destination of Excellence” (EDEN) in Serbia, whereas Pecinci and Krusevac have been selected as side destinations.

The winner was pronounced at an official ceremony at the City Assembly of Belgrade on Friday, September 27, the World Tourism Day.

The theme of this year's national EDEN contests held in 16 European countries was “Health and Wellness Tourism”, excluding medical tourism, the Tourism Organization of Serbia (TOS) says in a press release.

Special focus was placed on destinations which feature: a spa and/or special climate area designated by decree, protected area – national park, nature park, area with extraordinary characteristics, general or special nature reserve, nature monument, protected habitat, and UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The tourist offer in the territory of the municipality of Kursumlija, especially in health and wellness tourism, is a positive example of the transformation of former rehabilitation centers, oriented primarily to providing medical services, to modern trends which entail expanding the offer to include wellness services, the TOS notes.

This is primarily reflected in modern wellness and spa centers at the hotels in Prolom Banja and Lukovska Banja, and after the upcoming development of Kursumlijska Banja and the construction of a new hotel in Lukovska Banja are completed, the tourist offer of Kursumlija will become even stronger, making this municipality one of the most prominent health and wellness destinations in Serbia.

The awarded destinations now have the option of increased international promotion and taking part in the operations of the national and the European EDEN network, which aims at an exchange of good practices between the awarded destinations and inciting other destinations in Europe to adopt models of sustainable development of tourism.
