Will there be a “Zagreb Waterfront”?
(Belgrade Waterfront as the model) Mayor of Zagreb Milan Bandic insists on the megalomaniac infrastructural project in the capital of Croatia, known as the Manhattan of Zagreb, despite the opposition from experts and the public.
The construction project would entail skyscrapers, apartments, office space and other premises and resembles the Belgrade Waterfront project.
While the critics warn that the construction would destroy the green areas and the cultural monuments, Bandic is looking to change the municipal spatial plan. As the state rejected the project the first time, the public discussion had to be repeated in mid-August. When the deadline expired, tens of thousands of complaints had been sent.
The City of the City project would be built in New Zagreb on a 110-ha area.
The new elite neighborhood would be built on the area between the Sava river, Veceslava Holjevca and Dubrovnik avenues and Radoslava Cimermana Street, where recreation premises, parks, a racing track and a part of the Zagreb Fair are currently located.
According to the initial agreement, the municipality would contribute land to the project, whereas investors from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Eagle Hills Group, known for the Belgrade Waterfront project, would finance the construction of the complex, along with the financing of EUR 500 million.
