Internet .yu domains to cease to exist at midnight

Serbian old Internet domains with .yu extension should cease to exist today (September 30, 2009) at midnight, which means that 4,000 websites in that domain will be deleted from the global network.

The Registry of National Internet Domain of Serbia (RNIDS) has asked international Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to extend the life of .yu domain for year or two, and, as the people from RNIDS told Beta, the decision could be made today at the meeting of the Board of Directors of ICANN.

According to the data provided by RNIDS, there were 40,000 websites in old .yu domain, 36,000 of which have been deleted because the users failed to extend them within the given time.

Registration of websites with .rs extension started on March 10, 2008, and total of 50,547 addresses have been registered in new domain prior to Tuesday.

Domain for government institutions was changed last year to gov.rs, while ac.rs is reserved for the state universities.

Requests for registration of domains are submitted to authorized registries whose list can be found on the website of RNIDS www.rnids.rs.
