- The automobiles that will be produced by "Fiat" in its new unit in Serbia may be offered to customers all around the world – said Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of the Italian manufacturer.
At the presentation of new small automobile "punto evo" in Italian port "Specia", Mr. Marchionne said that “regardless of which model is assembled in Serbia, that car can be globally used".
- “It could be offered to drivers all around the world” said Mr. Marchionne, but he did not specify what he meant by “globally used” - "Wall Street Journal" announced.
The New York business newspaper reminds that “Fiat” signed the agreement on purchase of 67% of Serbian automobile manufacturer “Zastava” in September 2008.
Investments in "Zastava" are part of the strategy of "Fiat" for larger production in the countries with cheap labor and lower costs than in Italy.
At the time when the agreement was signed, Mr. Marchionne announced the possibility of production of new model of cheap automobile in Serbian factory.
The plans for production of cheaper cars were announced by "Fiat" at the time when "Tata motors" successfully launched "nano" in India and when the popularity of “Renault’s” “Dacia” started to grow. Both are very cheap automobiles.
However, Mr. Marchionne did not want to give any comment at the presentation of “evo” on the speculations of Italian media that the car that will be assembled in the factory in Serbia will be in the class of cheaper models.
