History of Violence to be performed on September 20 at 53rd BITEF

The play “History of Violence” will be performed on September 20 at the Terazije Theater as part of the 53rd International Belgrade International Theater Festival (BITEF).

A student from a small French town picks up a young Algerian from a Paris street and takes him to his apartment. Besides sex, they also experience some hints of love, but everything ends up with a smartphone theft, a rape, and the fact that reporting this rape to the family and the authorities is impossible.

The autobiography of a young French writer Édouard Louis is arranged in the form of a puzzle by the renowned German director Thomas Ostermeier, who combines time perspectives and smaller narrative units, creating thus dramatic tension. The focus is not on the crime-erotic plot, but on various social evils which, although some of them might seem less visible, destroy civic society from the inside: provincial narrow-mindedness and intolerance, xenophobia, unprofessionalism and prejudices on the part of public services (healthcare and the police).

In this performance, Ostermeier seems to go back to his early, youthful phase, marked by contemporary topics, vehement acting, video-works, and live music, it is written on the website of the Goethe Institute.
