Special law on Morava Corridor adopted – Construction to start soon, works worth EUR 800 million

The National Assembly of Serbia has adopted the special Law on determining a public interest and special procedures for the realization of the project of construction of the infrastructural corridor of the E-761 highway, Pojate-Preljina section, better known as the Morava Corridor.

The construction of the Morava Corridor is expected to begin in mid-July, and it should be completed in two and a half years. A loan of EUR 800 million should be taken from “foreign investment corporations and funds” for the purpose of its realization.

Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic previously signed the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation regarding the project with the American company Bechtel, but said during the discussion about the law that there was no contract with any company and that the Government of Serbia would form a commission and only then find a partner.

The project will also entail the regulation of the West Morava river bed and the construction of a telecommunications corridor.

During the discussion, Mihajlovic said that the Morava Corridor was one of the most important routes when it comes to the country's economic development and that the 110-km Pojate-Preljina section would connect the citizens of central Serbia.

She said that the reason for a special law is that Serbia “can't wait”.

The corridor will be a direct connection between corridors 10 and 11, providing a better internal connection between western and southwestern and southern and southeastern parts of Serbia and further to Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.
