Construction of world's biggest airport completed

The construction of the world's biggest international airport, Daxing, has been completed in the capital of China, the city authorities announced.

As stated previously for Sputnik by the head of the project, Li Jianhua, Daxing is not merely an airport, but also the biggest transportation hub in China, with around USD 60 billion invested in its construction.

The airport, one of whose terminals has the shape of a “golden phoenix” and which has a million square meters, is scheduled for September 30, 2019, ahead of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and the project is personally supervised by President Xi Jinping.

Daxing is located 46 kilometers to the south of the city center. The main reason for its construction was to unload the Beijing Capital International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world. The distance between the two airports will be around 67 kilometers. The foundation stone was laid down on December 26, 2014, and the construction started on March 15, 2016.

The new airport will have four runways and be able to handle up to 620,000 flights a year. The project envisages a capacity of 72 million passengers by 2025. Also, by 2025, the new airport should handle up to two million tons a year.

The airport's roof has already been recognized as the world's largest airport terminal steel roof, equal in area to 25 standard soccer fields. The late designer and architect Zaha Hadid took part in designing the airport.
