“Rio tinto” company interested in exploitation of kryptonite in Serbia


International mining company, “Rio tinto” is interested in exploitation of kryptonite (or jadarit) mineral in Serbia, as it was announced today (August, 25th, 2009) from the Ministry of mining and energy sector of Serbia.
As it stands in the announcement, the delegation of “Rio tinto” company has presented their projects, prepared for realization in Serbia, to the Minister of mining and energy sector, Petar Skundric, in Belgrade.
“Rio tinto” company, which holds the third position in the world, has sent its team to Serbia with Energy and Minerals Sector Director, Preston Chiaro. The company’s head office is located in Australia.
“Rio tinto” is already present in Serbia, conducting a serious of research in Jadar basin, in Loznica Municipality and at Janok location, on the territory of Kraljevo.
Representatives of “Rio tinto” team are satisfied with obtained results and they are planning to start preparation work for a preliminary feasibility study for exploitation of …mine.
If everything should go according the plans, kryptonite mine, which is a pine and lithium mineral mine is expected to be opened in the next few years, as it was announced by the Ministry of mining and energy sector.
It was also said that basic commercial products taken from kryptonite mineral were lithium carbonate, pine acid and Na sulfate.
Lithium carbonate is used in manufacture of lithium batteries for mobile phones, computers and cars that have electrical and hybrid power. Jadar basin could satisfy European needs for lithium carbonate for the next few decades.
As it was estimated by the Ministry of mining and energy sector, the opening of this mine is a significant encouragement and signal to other world multinational companies to come and invest in the mining sector of Serbia.
