Mihajlovic emphasized that the government invested in railway development and modernization so that Serbia would become an inevitable transit corridor in railway traffic, as it is in road traffic.
– In order to achieve this, we need reconstructed railways, new trains, trained drivers, as well as to follow global technological development – she explained.
According to her, there is still a lot of work to be done for the railway Corridor 10 to be fully modernized in five to six years.
Mihajlovic also reminded that, in the past period, 48 passenger trains had been procured and that 16 freight trains had also been procured after nearly 40 years. She also emphasized the importance of employing young train drivers.
Several years ago, she noted, the average age of train drivers at Serbia Cargo was close to 50, and over 180 young drivers have been employed in the past two years.
Also, nearly 500 kilometers of railways have been reconstructed in the past period, whereas another 500 kilometers will be reconstructed this and next year, Mihajlovic announced.
The acting director of Serbia Cargo, Dusan Garibovic, said that the new locomotives had been procured with the support of the Government of Serbia, the deputy prime minister, the competent ministry and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The CEO of Siemens in Serbia, Udo Eichlinger, said that, thanks to the engines which had been delivered to Serbia Cargo, the company would become very competitive in the field of cargo transport on the railway Corridor 10 and elsewhere.
