At the Clinical-Hospital Center Zemun in Belgrade, surgeons have removed a blood clot from the blood vessels of a brain for the first time. The patient recently had two open heart surgeries.

This method entails full anesthesia, and a catheter is placed through a blood vessel in the groin area to reach the main blood vessels of the brain stem. Specific instruments are then used to remove the clot. A team of well-trained experts in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, radiology and anesthetics at the Clinical-Hospital Center Zemun, carried out this demanding intervention in cooperation with Dr Milan Mijailovic without any complications, explained Dr Dragos Stojanovic, the director of the Clinical-Hospital Center Zemun.

With brain strokes, time is of the key factor, and it is extremely important to visit a doctor as soon as the first symptoms occur. The blood clot needs to be removed within eight hours from the occurrence of the first symptoms.
