Serbia has gotten the negligible risk status for mad cow disease, the Ministry of Agriculture announced. The certificate was handed over on May 30 to the acting director of the Veterinary Department, Emina Milakara, at the General Meeting of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

– What this certificate means for producers and the veterinary service, as well for the state, is a special status in international trade of cattle and beef. It also raises the reputation of the veterinary profession and reduces the costs of testing in the production and sale of food – the press release says.

Mad cow disease can be contracted by humans and is a concern in every country in the world. There have not been any fatal cases in either humans or animals in Serbia.
