Vienna is “the smartest city in the world”. This is confirmed by the current Smart City Index, a study which compares 153 cities and rates them by use of the smartest solutions to challenges such as the increasing populace, traffic and climate issues, but also digital solutions useful to citizens. This is the second year in the row that Vienna has topped the list. This year, it is followed by London and St. Albert.

Vienna tops the list thanks to a developed Smart City strategy implemented in concrete projects.

– What is so compelling about Vienna's performance is not just the fact that it has integrated solutions for mobility and the environment, an advanced e-health approach and – a first in the German-speaking world – open government data. It has also introduced a standardized monitoring system for all of its Smart City projects – the study says.

A total of 12 criteria and 31 subcategories go into the ranking, some of which are: housing, infrastructure, business-orientation, education and the health system. Vienna got 74 out of 100 points.

– Even though Vienna has topped the list, the city still needs to develop and take further steps. Vienna mustn’t become a city where only the elites profit from digitization – Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig warned.
