North Macedonia plans construction of solar power plants – Public call to open soon

(Illustration) In the first phase of the new model for the development of renewable energy sources (RES), the Government of North Macedonia will soon open a public call for the construction of solar power plants of 62 MW, of which 35 MW on state land and 27 MW on private parcels, along with the allocation of feed-in premiums.

North Macedonia currently has solar power plants with 18.4 MW, and the new model entails 200 MW by the end of 2021.

The state parcels, as the Macedonian government announced, are located near Makedonski Brod (two locations of 5 MW each) and Sveti Nikole (one location each for 10 MW and 5 MW power plants, two for 2MW power plants and six for 1 MW power plants).

According to Deputy Prime Minister Koco Angjushev, investors will sell electrical energy in the market, while receiving 15-year feed-in premiums from the state. Subsidies of EUR 4 million, to be set aside from the budget, are planned for the whole 200 MW.

The state will open a public call and define the initial price for the premiums, after which investors will bid at electronic auctions.

The bidder that offers the lowest premium, while meeting the technical requirements, will win the contract, Angjushev emphasized.

As he said, the state will finish many administrative procedures for investors, such as the repurposing of land, the obtaining of the building permit, power connections and others, which used to be a big issue.

As the Government of North Macedonia announced, with the technical help of the EBRD, the first draft of the tendering documentation for the selection of investors in solar power plants has been prepared.
