Placing waste containers for sorting waste - first recycling isle in Belgrade

Public Utility Company (PUC) 'Gradska čistoća' opened first recycling isle in Belgrade in Gandhi Street in Novi Belgrade yesterday (17/6/2009).

At the same time, placing of these isles has started in 38 other locations in ten Belgrade municipalities. An isle consists of three waste containers of different type - for disposal of paper, metal and plastic material.

For the purpose of easy usage of the containers, they are in different colours: green ones are for disposal of paper, blue ones for metal and orange ones for plastic.

- The aim of the plan for primary sorting waste in the place of its occurrence is to introduce European standards in disposal of waste material. By sorting the waste in categories, we will make our city more beautiful and environment healthier, and at the same time we will disencumber the city dumps. We expect first intake of waste in Vinca, the one that takes 1000 years to disintegrate, to decrease for some 30-40 % - Aleksandar Stamenković, director of PUC 'Gradska čistoća' emphasized.

Once there is enough such isles, Stamenković added, we will open additional recycling yards for furhter processing. 'Gradska čistoća' disposes of one power plant which is situated on Ada Ciganlija.
