Refurbishment of "Gazela" to start in autumn - no threat to traffic flow

The Director General of "Putevi Srbije", Zoran Drobnjak, said that the reconstruction of "Gazela" bridge would start as soon as the unhygienic settlement was relocated, but not before the Universiade ended. The works will start in September at the latest, and they will last until the end of the next year.
- Refurbishment of "Gazela", which should start immediately after the unhygienic settlement is moved, is not going to additionally burden the flow of traffic on that bridge - Drobnjak told Tanjug.
According to his words, one lane should be closed in September, while complete two-week stoppage of traffic in one direction is in the plan for the next year, for the needs of paving works.
- "Gazela" is not going to be a problem, but traffic will be significantly decelerated because of the works on the highway between Bubanj Potok and Surčin, which will require closing of all lanes on one side of the highway, while the other side will be used for traffic in both directions - says Drobnjak.
In that period, as he added, existing three lanes in one direction will be turned into four lanes, two for each direction. During the works, which should be completely finished at the end of the next year, the bridge will be fully refurbished, and there will be no need for any works on it within the next 10 to 15 years.
Drobnjak warned that "Gazela" was in such condition that immediate commencement of its refurbishment was necessary. The precondition for that is the Action plan for relocation of unhygienic settlements on the territory of Belgrade for year 2009, which has recently been adopted by the City Council.
