The works were mostly financed from the EU pre-accession funds in the amount of EUR 1.8 million, whereas around EUR 300,000 was provided through national co-financing.
Serbian Finance Minister Sinisa Mali said that the new border crossing would unload Horgos and Kelebija border crossings, as it is located halfway between Subotica and Smederevo.
He said that the border crossing had been built in line with the highest standards and that it featured everything necessary for the proper functioning of passenger transport and the efficient operations of customs services.
– There are now two lanes in both directions, which will considerably speed up the traffic flow. Passengers will benefit the most from the new border crossing, because, in the season when they are the most numerous, this crossing will be a good alternative – Mali said.
A total of 700 cars pass through the Bajmok border crossing on average each day, but now, according to the minister, the number of vehicles is expected to increase considerably, as the route will be the quickest link to some European capitals, like Vienna.
