BABIC: Highway to be rebuilt from scratch for the first time, damage amounts to at least EUR 10 million

It has never happened in Serbia that a built highway needs to be rebuilt from scratch, but that’s exactly what’s happened on the Ub-Lajkovac section on Corridor 11, stated Zoran Babic, the director of the PE Corridors of Serbia.

– The road simple fell apart even before it opened for traffic. When the outer layer was stripped off, the state of the road proved to be even worse than the initial tests had indicated. Low quality materials were used, there was a large amount of clay and the drainage system had not been done properly – Babic told Blic.

A large part of it, he added, will have to be fully rebuilt, which will cost at least EUR 10 million. Babic invited all those who are responsible to come and see what’s been done.

– The company’s repairing the damage are making great efforts to make the road section safe by the end of the year and enable the whole section to Preljina to open for traffic – Babic says.

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic announced that the criminal charges against those responsible would be expanded.
