Works at Republic Square in Belgrade to continue under changed project
Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesic announced on November 6 that the reconstruction of the Republic Square would soon continue, but under a changed project, which will allow for the archaeological excavations to be made available to the public.
After a meeting at the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Belgrade, it was specified that their works would take until the next Thursday, after which it will be announced what exactly was found at the Square, Vesic told RTS.
Vesic said that he expected the Institute to propose how to preserve the remains. It is generally assumed that what has been found are the remains of the Stambol Gate, but some experts believe that these might be remains of the Wurttemberg Palace and Barracks, built and demolished during the Austrian rule.
– In any case, we will change the project in line with the Institute's proposition, and the excavations will be preserved and displayed to citizens and tourists – Vesic said, as reported by Beoinfo.
