Another EUR 2 million for Balkan movie theater – Opening in 2020

The official opening of the “Balkan” movie theater in Belgrade is planned for the fall of 2020. Until then, a part of the premises at 16 Brace Jugovic Street will be open for exhibits, where advantage will be given to young, promising artists.

The reconstruction of this edifice began in 2014 and was supposed to be completed in May 2015. However, it was postponed on several occasions. The new owner, Sasa Marceta, says that he wants to recover this building and put it in service of the citizens of Belgrade once again. In order for the movie theater to become operational, procurement of expensive equipment is needed.

– I have bought this facility because I want to turn it into a place of culture, not a commercial facility, as media have speculated. The purchase cost EUR 3 million, so far we've invested EUR 2 million, and another EUR 2 million should be invested until 2020, when the opening should take place – Marceta says.

According to him, the works are overseen by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Belgrade.

The works will certainly be finished by 2020, but the problem, according to Marceta, is that the necessary equipment is too expensive.

– The purchase of the technology, such as the lighting, air conditioning, projectors and speakers, is still uncertain. We've had offers that exceed a million euros, which is too much. However, we will try to solve this issue before the opening – he pointed out.

The building will have four levels with 2,000 square meters in total, whereas the movie theater area itself will take up 500 square meters. The plan also includes a hospitality section and two elevators. The hall is expected to have 350 to 400 seats, including the gallery, which will be retractable. There will also be VIP rooms and rooms where actors will be able to prepare for the performance.

The facade has been completed, the carpentry works are nearly done, and the toilet facilities are done as well.

– Most of the ornaments, which were damaged, have been reconstructed. These are the most demanding and time-consuming works – Marceta points out.

Once these works are done, the project will move on to the heating installations and the flooring.

The building was raised in 1870 on the foundations of a Turkish inn.
