According to the data sent by the NBS to Tanjug, at the end of September 2018, citizens' dinar savings amounted to RSD 56.4 billion.
– This is three times as much as in late 2012. In the first nine months of the current year, dinar savings increased by RSD 6.2 billion, that is, by 12.3% – says the NBS, which is marking the World Savings Week through programs of financial education until November 2.
Foreign exchange savings reached about EUR 9.7 billion in September, the majority of which, EUR 8.8 billion, are savings in euros. Since the beginning of the year, foreign exchange savings have grown by EUR 405.8 million, of which EUR 356.9 million are savings in euros.
In the past years, there's been a growing trend in Serbia when it comes to savings, and bankers say that the interest rates, although important, are certainly not the most important element in making a decision where to keep money. They point out that it is also important for the bank to be strong, stable and have long-term goals, to take care of its clients' needs and to have an offer which can meet the need of each individual client.
According to the latest data, the interest rate on euro savings in August 2018 stood at 0.79% on average. Observed by the savings period, the interest rate is 0.54% for up to one year, 1.09% for one to two years and 0.92% for over two years.
The interest rates on dinar savings are relatively higher and stand at 2.57% for up to a year and 3.99% for over two years. On average, banks offered the interest rate of 2.61% on dinar savings.
The World Savings Day was established on October 31, 1924, during the International Savings Bank Congress in Milan, which led to the establishment of the International Savings Institute.
On the occasion of the World Savings Week, banks in Serbia offer a set of savings products, aiming to raise awareness of the importance of savings, but also to foster the culture of choosing the right financial institution for the purpose.
