Sremski Karlovci to become university center of Serbia

Sremski Karlovci might soon become the university center of Serbia, featuring the best programs from all faculties, all to the end of attracting foreign students.

The initiative of the Ministry of Education for making Sremski Karlovci the academic center of Serbia was greenlit at the latest session of the Government of Serbia.

The decision was reached to form a work group for the preparation of the draft law on Sremski Karlovci, the center of Serbia's cultural and historical heritage.

The work group will feature representatives of three ministries – education, culture and trade, and the aim is for a new university center to be built in Sremski Karlovci, which will feature the best programs from all Serbian universities and resemble Germany's Heidelberg and Hungary's Pecs.

The new academic center would be primarily meant for foreigners who want to study in Serbia, but also students from the country.

The best local and foreign professors would be lecturers at this university, and Serbia has great logistics support from the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg in the realization of this project.

The plan is for the new university center to be raised on an area of 10,000 square meters, most of which belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Church.

– By the decision and with the blessing of Serbian Patriarch Irinej, the Serbian Orthodox Church will be involved in the project, since a part of the program will be dedicated to Orthodox Christianity, and we will do this in cooperation with states where it is part of the tradition, such as Greece, Cyprus and Russia – says the Ministry of Education.

The area which belongs to the Church and which, as they say, has great historical significance, will be used for the needs of the new university center.
