Belgrade to stop using plastic bags on January 1, 2020

Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesic has announced that the adoption of the decision on the ban on the use of plastic bags in the territory of the capital of Serbia from January 1, 2020, will be proposed at the next session of the City Assembly.

The City Council of Belgrade will adopt the decision, which will be put before the members of the City Assembly on September 25, by the end of the current week.

– This is the decision on the ban on the use of plastic bags in the territory of Belgrade from January 1, 2020 – Vesic said and specified that this meant that retail chains would be given around fifteen months to adapt, which is more than enough, according to him.

He also pointed out that, since retailers started charging for plastic bags, the use had dropped by 60%.

– It is now time for us to go a step further and ban the use plastic bags – the deputy mayor said.
