Nis plans to expand and cover Cair Stadium – Tender for project design placed

The City of Nis has called a tender for the design for reconstruction and covering the Cair stadium which will expand the stadium seating capacity from the current 18,400 seats to 22,000 seats, the Secretary for the Secretariat for Investments in the City of Nis, Vanca Dimitrov stated.

– The tender participants will be asked to design roof structures with lights along the edges for all stands. We also placed a tender for repairing the south and north stands. We plan to dismantle the entire west stand, Dimitrov said.

He reminded that the project design for reconstruction of the west stand was done two-and-a-half years ago and that the building regulations had changed in the meantime, which meant they couldn't get a permit with the previous project documentation.

– We plan to prepare the project documentation this year and to start the works next year. We've got confirmation that we can apply for the necessary funds at different Ministries, Dimitrov said.

According to him, the reconstruction and covering of the Cair Stadium is estimated at around EUR 15 million.

The Nis stadium was built in 1963 and restoration works began in 2011.

Back then it was plan for reconstruction to roll out in four phases, that is, to restore one stand at a time beginning with the east stand.

After the east stand was built from the ground up, all works ceased .Although the City Council decided back in, 2014 to take out a RSD 450 million loan for the construction of the west stand the decision was soon withdrawn while the city officials claimed it was done for austerity.

According to the city officials' announcements, the continuation of the reconstruction works will include replacing the grass in the entire field.
