Since 2009, EU residents have been buying halogen and LED bulbs instead of the standard ones. It was then that the ban on using regular bulbs came into effect.

Beginning with September 2018, halogen bulbs will be banned as well, Energetski Portal reports.

The decision aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint.

An argument against replacing halogen bulbs with LED ones is the price. Still, in the long term, LED lighting is more cost effective. These bulbs last for 15 to 20 years and consume less electricity.

The UK-based energy efficiency and sustainability organization Energy Saving Trust says that a halogen bulb spends EUR 12 worth of electricity in a year, whereas a LED bulb spends electricity in the amount of only 2 euros in the same period.

The international non-profit organization The Climate Group claims that the road to a healthier living environment is lit by LED bulbs.

Not only would the switch to this type of lighting by the biggest world companies mean the reduction of 403 million tons of harmful gases in the atmosphere, but they would also be stimulated to make the said transformation by economic reasons – the switch to LED lighting would save them EUR 82.5 billion.

In the EU, hundreds of millions of bulbs need to be replaced in order to make it “greener”.

However, the replacement doesn't have to be carried out immediately upon the implementation of the ban, but only after the installed halogen bulbs expire.
