Belgrade to host annual Mensa gathering

This August, Belgrade will host the biggest annual gathering of European members of Mensa, an organization which brings together people with an IQ of over 148. The event will be attended by over 500 members from 38 countries.

As announced by Mensa Serbia, Mensa members from Europe, as well as from Japan, Hong Kong, Chile, USA, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and South Africa, will arrive to Belgrade on Wednesday, August 1, and representatives of the highest Mensa authorities and national organizations are expected to attend as well.

– The organization of the European Mensas Annual Gathering (EMAG) is a great honor for our Mensa and a great challenge, especially considering that the previous hosts were Barcelona, Berlin and Paris and that the next event is organized by Mensa Belgium, the president of Mensa Serbia, Aleksandra Borovic, stated for Beta.

Ahead of the gathering, which will begin on August 1 with an event at the Old Palace, where the participants will have an opportunity to learn about Belgrade and Serbia and the people here through various lectures, a big science conference called “Giftedness, Education, Development” will be held.

This conference, which will feature around 100 lecturers from 16 countries, is being held with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, as well as the Ministry of Labor, Borovic said.

She reminded that Mensa’s mission was to direct the usage of intelligence to the benefit of the society as a whole.

– Around 500 participants of the EMAG from all continents are looking forward to meeting the people among which the man who changed the world by giving it light had originated and that is why there’s the most interest in the Museum of Nikola Tesla – she said.

There’s also a great interest in the Visitors’ Center of the National Bank of Serbia, where a collection of money from all eras is kept as a testimony of the turbulent history and various influences in the territory of the Balkans, but also in the Great War Island, known worldwide as a rare nesting ground of white-tailed eagles, of which there are now fewer than 90 on the entire continent.

Following the completion of the official program, the participants of the EMAG will have an opportunity to get to know Serbia from Palic to the Devil’s Town, from Viminacium to Ravanica, through space and time, Borovic said and added that the key element throughout the event will be socialization, “as one can’t get the full idea of a country without meeting its people and their customs”.

– As the tour through underground Belgrade introduces one to a city below the city, we hope that the participant will leave with a new perspective on Belgrade, which is much more than can be seen in the media – the organizers say in the press release.
